Muizenberg was once a military base. In 1795 the British defeated the Dutch in the Battle of Muizenberg. At the beginning of the 20th century Muizenberg became a prestigious seaside resort for affluent Capetonians. The grand mansions along the beach promenade are monuments of the former wealth of Muizenberg.
The bay is called "False Bay", because many years back, some ships coming from the east would stop in this bay mistaking it to be Table Bay. There is a panoramic view of the bay from Boyes Drive above Muizenberg.
